2016 Outer Banks Retreat

The Southeastern Chapter of Mystery Writers of America is pleased to present our first ever Writers’ Retreat.

April 15-17, 2016

(with optional early arrival April 10-14)

  • Recharge Your Creative Batteries
  • Work on Your Current Project or Try Your Hand at Writing Prompts
  • Brainstorm, Get Feedback from, and Enjoy the Company of Fellow Writers
  • Sessions on Plot Therapy, Storyboarding, and More

Although programming begins on April 15, the house will be available to participants beginning after 4;00 PM on Sunday, April 10. Come early and work on your novel or just enjoy a relaxing week by the ocean.(You’ll be responsible for your own meals from the afternoon of April 10th until the retreat officially begins on April 15th.)

Note: Spring is typically mild, but temperatures can be unpredictable. Average daytime temperatures are normally in the upper 60s and lower 70s.

Here’s Our Tentative Schedule

Sun, April 10 – Sun, April 17, 2016

House available. Registered participants may check in to the house at any time during the week, before the Retreat commences on Friday Afternoon.

Friday, April 15:

4:00 pm – Meet/Greet, Light Snacks & Beverages, Introduction of Board Members/Retreat Teachers (Maggie Toussaint,Joseph Terrell, Jaden (Beth) Terrell, Stacy Allen)

6:00 pm – Group dinner, catered. Location TBA

7:30 pm – After dinner gathering: SEMWA Board Member/Instructor will discuss retreat objectives, and, if participants are interested, an informal discussion on craft.

8:00 pm – Free time to socialize or write.



Saturday, April 16:

8:00 am – Breakfast (Participants will prepare their own breakfasts. SEMWA will provide ingredients and beverages)

9:00 am – General session. Those interested can participate in a one-hour workshop, presented by SEMWA Retreat Faculty.

10:00 am – Time to write, or one-on-one meetings with instructors

1:00 pm – Lunch. (Participants will make their own lunches. SEMWA will provide the ingredients & beverages.)

2:00 pm – Afternoon Writing Time

5:00 pm – Cocktail hour

6:00 pm – Dinner on our own, or reception hosted by local literacy group

7:30 pm – Meet back at the house, and those who want to read from their work may do so. No critiquing or feedback is done at this time. Listeners will take notes for the critique session Sunday morning.

Sunday, April 17:

8:00 am – Breakfast (Participants will make their own breakfasts. SEMWA will provide ingredients and beverages)

9:00 am – General Session. “Critique light”. Feedback of a general nature will be offered to the participants who chose to read Saturday evening. Time limits are to be determined, to give equal time to all. Questions, brainstorming.

11:00 pm – Lunch. Final words.

12:00 pm – Depart house, end of Retreat.

  • $400 for MWA members, $100 for an additional guest (non-participant)

Mar 2-Apr 9, 2016 – Open Registration

  • $400 for MWA members, $100 for an additional guest (non-participant)
  • $500 for nonmembers, $125 for an additional guest (non-participant)
