2018 Outer Banks Retreat

The Southeastern Chapter of Mystery Writers of America is pleased to present our SECOND ever Writers’ Retreat.

April 13-15, 2018

(with optional early arrival April 8-12)

  • Recharge Your Creative Batteries
  • Work on Your Current Project or Try Your Hand at Writing Prompts
  • Brainstorm, Get Feedback from, and Enjoy the Company of Fellow Writers
  • Sessions on Plot Therapy, Storyboarding, and More

Although programming begins on April 13, the house will be available to participants beginning after 4:00 PM on Sunday, April 8. Come early and work on your novel or just enjoy a relaxing week by the ocean. (You’ll be responsible for your own meals the entire time.)

Note: Spring is typically mild, but temperatures can be unpredictable. Average daytime temperatures are normally in the upper 60s and lower 70s.

Here’s Our Tentative Schedule

Sun, April 8 – Sun, April 15, 2018

House available. Registered participants may check in to the house at any time during the week, before the Retreat commences on Friday Afternoon. Afternoon thirty-minute craft workshops available upon request Monday to Friday from Retreat Staff.

Friday, April 13:

4:00 pm – Meet/Greet, Light Snacks & Beverages, Introduction of Retreat Staff (Maggie Toussaint and Stacy Allen) and Retreat Facilitator (Joseph Terrell)

6:00 pm – Dinner on our own. Explore the local cuisine, dine in, or invite others to join you.

7:30 pm – After dinner gathering: Retreat Staff will discuss retreat objectives, and, if participants are interested, an informal discussion on craft.

8:00 pm – Free time to socialize or write.

Saturday, April 14:

8:00 am – Breakfast (Participants will prepare their own breakfasts.)

9:00 am – General session. Those interested can participate in two one-hour workshops, presented by SEMWA Retreat Faculty.

11:00 am – Time to write, or one-on-one meetings with instructors

12:30 pm – Lunch. (Participants will make their own lunches.)

2:00 pm – Afternoon Writing Time

3:30 pm – Meeting in small groups for readings, critiques, or additional instruction. This slot is participant-driven.

6:00 pm – Dinner on our own, or reception hosted by local literacy group

8:00 pm – Meet back at the house, and those who want to read from their work may do so. No critiquing or feedback is done at this time.

Sunday, April 15:

8:00 am – Breakfast (Participants will make their own breakfasts.)

9:00 am – Pack and load cars

10:00 pm – Depart house, end of Retreat.

Nov 1 – Apr 7, 2018 – Open Registration

  • $395 for Retreat participant, $55 for an additional guest (non-participant)
Cancellation & refunds:
90+ days prior (by 1/8/18) —  Full refund (minus a $25 admin fee)
89-60 days prior (1/9 to 2/8/18) — 50% refund (minus $25 admin fee)
59-30 days prior: (2/9 to 3/8/18) — 25% refund (minus $25 admin fee)
29 -0 days prior: No refund
